Casa Vida y Esperanza is seeking additional support to continue to grow our after-school program, HILOS. HILOS is a program that reaches children and families from Colegio Verdad y Vida (the Christian private school on the CVE campus), by connecting the family, society, and Christ and modeling a Christ-centered lifestyle. Our goal in HILOS is to support the families and children of our community by teaching them about Jesus, practicing relational skills, and offering courses that allow them to develop talents and try new things.

We are seeking individuals to help teach or assist with the courses taught at HILOS and assist with the overall work with the children and families. We are looking for applicants who are members of the Apostolic Christian Church who demonstrate the fruit of the spirit, have a heart for serving children and families, are flexible, willing to learn and grow, and who know or are willing to learn Spanish. As the position in HILOS would probably not be full time, we are looking for individuals who take initiative and would be involved in supporting the ministry of CVE. Other support roles could include childcare, maintenance of the facilities and landscape, cooking, hosting teams and visitors or bookkeeping.

             – Wednesday meeting with Hungarian elders and church services in Baja, Hungary. Dave, Lowell, Pete and Bill traveled with Filip to Baja, Hungary where they met with 10 Hungarian elders, 1 deacon and 2 interpreters. The topic was Ukraine. 2 Hungarian elders and a deacon had recently accompanied Filip and Adriana to Ukraine with a delivery. The discussion was friendly and open and our approaches to sending aid to Ukraine is similar – both using Filip’s weekly deliveries to distribute funds to Ukraine. Evening church services started at 6 pm, followed by a few remarks by Dave and Bill and a singing and fellowship concluding at 9 pm. Adriana and 10 of her and Filip’s children joined the group for the evening meal and church. Arrived at Antioch at 1 am.

             – Thursday meeting with Romanian elders and deacons. Dave, Lowell, Pete and Bill met with six Romanian elders and deacons at Antioch. Church building projects were discussed with highlight of approval of renovation project at Tasnad church. Cash aid was discussed with a likely increase in funds for winter fuel due to 60% increase in prices. The brethren are very thankful for the assistance and they stretch it pretty far. There are many older brethren and Romanian pensions are meager. Food packages were delivered to Chesa and Rapa congregations in the evening.

Afternoon services were at Caransebes with brethren from Toplets and Teregova in attendance. Gerry, Lowell, and Bill each added a few remarks. This was followed by a singing and a meal. Filip’s son Tobias and Pete drove to Budapest airport to pick up Matt and missed out on the day’s other activities.

The Bukovina area where the churches are have not been bombed. Work opportunities are limited, construction has slowed considerably, government family aid is reduced, food and fuel are still available but very expensive, and medicine is hard to find. We likely will increase the regular aid given three times per year by 25%. Some agriculture needs were discussed. Matt shared some details of the Ukrainian families who are refugees in the Rittman area. The group left Chahor church at 8:45 pm and arrived at the border hotel at 10:30 pm after a 75 minute border crossing. On Wednesday July 6

At Munich, the brothers had a quick meal together and then said their good-byes to catch various flights. Each of the brothers returned safely home after traveling up to 27 hours. Thus ended a very blessed trip.

Last night, a truck from the Netherlands delivered 1,211 comforters, 200 bed sheets and 200 pillow cases to the Antioch facility in Vladimirescu, Romania. Due to the way the shipments were packed, another 251 comforters will be delivered to CAM in Chernivtsi, Ukraine where they will be available for pickup for return to Antioch. There was a lot of effort and coordination to make this happen. Thanks to all who had a part in it. These comforters are very well received by the recipients.

trips into Ukraine. Along with the last load was one of the BCS tillers we purchased for their gardens (see photo). The border was very busy partially due to Easter Orthodox Easter being this week. With thanks to God, Filip is safely at home and delivering food packages in Romania. He sends his love and greetings to everyone including the greetings of the brethren in Ukraine.

The situation in Ukraine has not changed a lot in the last week although things seem to be tightening up as far as security at the border and along the streets with lots of police and checkpoints everywhere. Another source told us this week that there were 558 vehicles waiting to cross at the Ukrainian border. He got across in two hours on entry and fairly rapidly on exit for which we are all thankful.

Availability of consumer goods in the stores and markets is very sporadic. Some days available and some days not, but always getting more expensive. Diesel is very expensive and getting higher and very hard to get. The brothers are attempting to work the fields, but they have to be very careful as the military picks up any young man that they can see and takes them to the army. Filip says there is no exemption for believers and all must carry weapons according to military law. So far none of our brethren have been taken in this manner. However, there is constant anxiety and they have to watch everywhere they go.

The believers are trying to live lives as normal as possible, and with gratitude to God they were able to have a baptism in Dimka this past weekend. However as stated there is a lot of uncertainty and great anxiety and worry among everyone. We need to keep each other in our prayers.

Report from Brothers Pete Webel, Joel Putt and Ken Manz who recently returned from a trip to Romania and into Ukraine, on behalf of the HarvestCall European Committee (EEC).

We felt the prayers of the church. We felt love and support from the brethren in Romania and Ukraine. The Antioch facility provides material aid for Romania and Ukraine as well as Nazarene brethren in other countries. We very much appreciate the efforts of Bro. Filip Augustinov and his family at Antioch.

Some items discussed or acted upon were good relations with the Antioch board, what brethren in Ukraine are facing, extra seed money for Ukrainian farms and gardens, brethren with more than 3 children leaving Ukraine to find work or to immigrate, a corn header request, military service and bearing arms, spiritual messaging along with material aid, BCS garden tillers with attachments for Ukraine and Romania, comforter and adult brief shipments, beds and bedding shipments, food materials from USA, ongoing funding needs, Ukraine government/military taking vehicles for military use, planning an EEC visit in June, and investigating funding material aid for refugees in Hungary.

Our theme was brotherhood – we are brothers to Jesus Christ and we purpose to treat all his brothers as he would ask us to. There are differences in language and culture, but as Bro. Duane Farney says, “People are people wherever you go.”

Typical days started at 9 am and ended about 10:30 pm with additional hours spend discussing, communicating with EEC, writing reports and translating. We spent many hours (perhaps average 6 to 7 hours per day) riding in the white VW van making a trip to Ukraine and delivering food packages to individuals and congregations for their distribution. Typically, we were pulling a trailer.

There are about 30 people from Ukraine in Romania either working, seeking medical help, or planning to immigrate. They are housed in members’ homes and at Antioch living quarters (where we stay). Feeding that many people 3 times a day is quite a challenge.

The trip to Ukraine was definitely a highlight. We loaded the van and covered trailer for Ukraine Wednesday morning and drove to a hotel at the border town of Siret, Romania. We spent the morning touring the border on Romanian side and investigating needs. We crossed the border and went to the Chahor church where we unloaded, ate, and spent 2 hours meeting with 2 elders and a minister. There were 22 people there to help besides Filip, Adriana and we three. We were very warmly received. We stayed overnight at a hotel and arrived home Friday evening.

They pray for us and ask for our prayers in their time of need. We can learn a lot from them and deeply appreciate their faith in action.

Based on feedback by European Committee (EEC) members traveling with Filip to the border and into Ukraine and a lot of work at the Eastern Ohio Distribution Center, it was decided to ship by air to Netherlands and truck to Antioch in Romania. The shipment leaves today and is expected to reach the Netherlands by April 12 and Antioch about 10 days later. The shipment consists of 1,462 comforters, 200 bed sheets, 200 pillow cases, 100 toddler PVC bunk cots with canvas tops, 50 adult foam padded plywood bunk cots, 28 foam mattresses, 3,600 pairs of adult socks, and 100 infant layette kits. Thanks to all everywhere for bringing this all together. Most of this will be used at refugee camps throughout Romania and in Chernivitsi, Ukraine (near our brethren where refugees are displaced within Ukraine from embattled areas).

at Antioch by a dozen participants. Filip & Adriana, along with three EEC members, left after lunch and drove to the border where they stayed overnight. The morning was spent touring the Romanian side of the border and assessing their needs for beds and associated supplies. We saw a slow-moving line of refugees seeking to cross the border on foot. They were mostly women, children and older men. It took nearly 2 hours for us to get through customs. A car of our brethren met us at the border and we followed them to the Chahor church where lunch was served and the loaded van and covered trailer were unloaded. There were 15 men and boys and 7 women and girls from Ukraine who helped. We met with 2 elders and an ordained deacon to deliver money, to discuss EEC matters and to get an update on what is happening and expected. Chahor church is about 40 minutes North of the Romanian border, we were at the church about 3.5 hours, and it take 1 hour to cross coming back.

The police and military are taking men into the military. If they see men on the streets, they take them - so the younger men are advised to stay home. Men age 18 to 60 are eligible, but for now those with 3 or more children are exempt. So far, none of our believers have been taken, but there was one close call. They did not know whether the men would be allowed to be assigned so they didn’t have to bear arms. The authorities have taken some vehicles, some large tractors, and some supplies from citizens or organizations. So far, our Nazarene brethren have given 2 used vehicles. There is very little work. Some wages have been reduced, and prices are high. Government payments to support raising children have not been received the last 3 months.

About 5 believing families have left the country and are not expected to come back. About 4 families are now in Romania and are expected to come back. The Ukrainian brethren are very thankful for the love and support they receive. They are receiving help from other European and American churches. They are working hard to avoid long term dependencies as they administer the funds and supplies. Prayers are appreciated and they pray for us.

Filip & Adriana took the 3rd shipment into Ukraine on 3/24/22. The situation is worse than before although so far there is no fighting. However, they are taking away the private cars from individual people for use in the military. This news is fresh and the extent of it not known. The planting season is very much in question. They cannot get seed or fertilizer very easily. There is no soybean seed. Other seeds are available in limited supply. Fuel for the machines is also very tight. It does not look good for a harvest this year. All of this is fluid.

They go to show support and presence for the relief efforts surrounding Antioch and to assess the situation there to help guide efforts on an ongoing basis. On the 2nd trip, he was waited at the border by the elder brothers. There is still peace in the Cernauti area, but there are many police filters with the army. Men who have at least three children, even if they are over 18, have started to leave the country. There are still a lot of women with children in strollers and on their hands leaving in Romania. On Sunday, March 20, there was baptism in church Corovia. A young brother dared to leave by car and was stopped by the police. When they saw that he was a young man, they sent him directly to the army. The brother prayed a lot not to send him, so the police felt sorry and let him go. The young people are very afraid not to be sent to the army. Work for the brothers is still not available. A few companies started working, but an extra tax was put on the salary, it's called the war tax. So, the salary is low. At these companies more sisters are working. When the alarm goes off, everyone has to go into bunkers, hideouts and wait for the alarm to go off. There were days when all the workers had to stay in hiding from three to five hours. In the shops from the area where the believers live, there are food and those that are strictly necessary, but they remain very expensive. We want God to strengthen and comfort our brothers and sisters in Ukraine.

: Brethren from Romania/Antioch were again able to make the day-long trip across Romania, across the Ukrainian border to the Chahor church. We are very thankful this way is open at this time and solicit your prayers that the way may remain open. The Ukrainian brethren are coping with their country’s situation and holding the fort for Jesus is coming. The Romanian brethren are very diligent in purchasing, packing and delivering food, medicine, and supplies to the refugees in Romania near the Ukrainian border as well. The American brethren care deeply and continually look for ways to support and help in their time of need.

We authorized additional monies for Antioch to purchase materials for upcoming shipments to Ukrainian brethren and Romanian refugee camps. We also authorized funds for beds and bedding projects at Eastern Ohio HC Distribution Center. The EEC approved a 10 day trip to Romania March 28 thru April 7 for at least 2 committee members to observe and help with relief efforts and assess ongoing needs. The comforter shipment will be held for about 2 weeks as we anticipated filling the weight allowances with beds/bedding per above.

Update from Ukrainian elder (Saturday morning phone call)

"We thank the Lord that so far the area of Bukovina, there are no problems with the war like in the East. There are concerns with what will come in the future. Sunday mornings we can go to church, but not the afternoon/evening, because of curfew. There are a lot of young people that want to get out but they must stay home. So far there is food in the stores still. The Word of God tells us if we have food and clothing we should be thankful. It is clearly writing in the Word this is what will happen in the end times."

As far as he knows no one has been required to serve in the military.

None of the believers have fled Ukraine because of the war. There are some refugees from the East being taken care of by believers. So far they can cover the expenses for the refugees. In hospitals, there are some medications that aren’t available anymore, but majority of things they can get. When asked if fathers continue working and pay their bills, he answered “Good question!” Majority of them work in construction. And construction has stopped due to the war, no one wants to build. The largest request is that we would pray that God would keep them safe. They will communicate unfolding needs.

A window of opportunity opened to take material aid into Ukraine to support our brethren there next Friday and Saturday (3/11 & 3/12). The shipment will include adult depends, baby diapers, 100 pairs of shoes (from Germany), medicine and 100 comforters. They need to buy some of the items and funds from the committee will be sent Monday to cover two trips. 200 comforters will go on the 2nd trip.

As to comforters and other bed coverings, Filip said other sizes would be a big help as many refugees are children and they can use what we send. We are looking at sending what we can get around in March to Romania. We are checking with CAM for available delivery dates.

10 pallets of soup are coming to Antioch from Holland along with other supplies. It is easier coming from Europe (Holland) to the USA, but Filip agreed to check whether a shipment of food from USA was feasible.

The Hungarian churches are prepared to help any brethren coming from Ukraine, and Filip did not think they need aid from us at this time.

Filip liked the concepts for plywood beds/mattresses coming from Eastern Ohio Harvest Call Center and we will continue to pursue. According to latest available data, 1.45 million people have left Ukraine. .

An opportunity for one or more committee members to travel to Romania and observe and help seems open at the end of March.

Regarding sending humanitarian aid, I have seen a warehouse full of preserves, toilet paper, hygiene articles. We have already made reservations for 11 pallets chicken soup.

They have 1.25 pallets of candles. They have plenty vegetables in cans and e.g. ravioli in cans, pasta, rice, sugar, water in bottles, cooking oil, olive oil, toothpaste, toothbrushes, ladies hygiene articles, shower gel, shampoo, etc. I will try to connect to a Dutch farmer with a company in both

Poland and Ukraine, to see if he can help to import the humanitarian aid. I will coordinate it with Filip and keep you in the loop.

Report out of Antioch from Filip:

Shipment was delivered to refugee camp today. The mayor from the towns of the Sighetul Marmatiel border area, where a refugee center has been established, says heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given anything to help the refugees.

There is an opportunity to help inside Ukraine. Older members in Ukraine have requested adult depends, children’s diapers, shoes and other things as soon as possible. They say aid can be brought across the Romanian/Ukrainian border by truck or van and unloaded - return as of now is allowed. The Ukrainian brethren would need to take it to where it is needed. This is expected to be pursued vigorously.

In the village of Olexiivca, 90 miles from Zapotozhye in Eastern Ukraine, where a few members live, there was a Russian invasion yesterday. Tanks and other military equipment are on the streets and the market was robbed. The soldiers go into the houses and request groceries and product from the families there. Shots are heard in the village. So far no one has come into Nazarean homes.

So far as we know, some of the believers have been called in for questioning, but none have been conscripted into military service against their will. We will continue to monitor this and update if it changes.

We heard from a USA organization with 130 staff in Ukraine. All are safe. Some have moved to be further from the areas being attacked. Communication is still possible between areas. Churches are opening their doors for people to stay.

We heard from an American Mennonite missionary woman who had left Ukraine. She shared, “The safest place to be is in the center of God’s will.” It was very hard for her to leave and she fought second guessing her decision. She said her good-byes and hopes to return.

We heard from a Ukrainian brother. He says they are safe. Schools are closed and kids have vacation. There is martial law and all men from 18 to 60 are not allowed to leave Ukraine. People are weighing leaving the country. He asked, Please pray for us for the Lord to guide us and to let us see his will for us.

We heard from another Ukrainian brother. There was an air alert in Chernivtsi for two nights lasting about 1.5 hours. Finding shelter in multiple family apartment type dwellings is unhandy. They took in a family from Kiev into their home. You can still get almost everything in the shops, but often very expensive. Gas stations are also working, but many times they run out of fuel.

Reports from Europe (David van Dam) are that every village has an action for help Ukraine and also for the refugees … really amazing. Filip, (our primary contac/liaison) will send a truck on Wednesday, March 2nd, with the food and power generators, diapers. A donation was made for one power generator. We are sourcing for more … also 1.25 pallets of candles have been donated for Antioch. Let us pray for generosity.

A note from Bro. Filip – “May God’s peace be with you all. It now looks that it would be greatly necessary to help the refugees from Ukraine. I am trying to send food stuffs, diapers for children, bed covers (comforters), etc. They also requested if we could help them with a generator for electricity.” He said some of these people are in Romania and some are waiting on the Ukrainian side. They are sleeping in a very bad situation and they need these products.

Report from Bro. Filip. - Today, five brothers at least were called to the army. We have information about these five brothers from which one is a deacon and one is a minister. There are a few families from the believers which have come over the border into Romania. Some are on the way to Arad, but some are sleeping overnight in Suceava. Another two families are near the border. They must wait about 24 hours at the border. People cannot drive a car over the border – only by foot.

           · Report from Janos Namenyi, Bukovina – Currently at 7:30 pm on Saturday, I don’t know of any of the families of believers who would be brought into the army because of the war. This can change at any time. There are lots of volunteers (I heard) who decided to take up arms to fight. New information. 7:50 pm – Three brothers are invited to the military service from one of our congregations with 4, 7, and 10 children resp. Three from another congregation got draft call with 2, 10, and 12 children resp. More and more refugees are coming to Chernivtsi, some are staying in hotels, some are staying in schools and other places. They are abundantly assisted by residents of the city and surrounding areas. I visited a place where the organizers could no longer handle the lots of gifts for the refugees that the locals had brought in. I saw all kinds of objects and food there. We still hope to have a church service tomorrow morning, but only God knows how it will be. Thank you for your love and understanding for us.
