Most followers of Christ genuinely want to help others. Yet good intentions alone don't always produce healthy outcomes. Sunset Gap invites participants to discover a more biblical approach to serving others – one that values dignity over dependency, partnership over projects, and long-term transformation over short-term solutions. Through community development, practical service, and guided reflection, participants learn how to love their neighbors in ways that strengthen rather than unintentionally harm.
“Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.” Romans 12:16

What is Sunset Gap?
Poverty is often more complex than it first appears. While it's natural to focus on immediate needs, lasting transformation grows through relationships, healthy partnerships, and recognizing the God-given dignity, gifts, and potential already present within every person and community. Sunset Gap introduces participants to biblical principles of community development that challenge common assumptions about service while offering a healthier vision of helping.
As part of preparing for the experience, participants work through Helping Without Hurting in Short-Term Missions, establishing a biblical framework that shapes the conversations, service, and reflection throughout the week. Community projects, relationships with local residents, guided discussion, and biblical teaching work together to demonstrate that healthy ministry is measured not simply by what we accomplish, but by how we love, listen, empower, and partner with others.
The lessons of Sunset Gap don’t end when the week is over. Participants return home with practical tools for engaging their churches and communities in ways that build dignity, encourage local leadership, and strengthen relationships. The biblical principles learned continue shaping how they approach generosity, missions, community outreach, and everyday opportunities to love their neighbors with wisdom and humility.
Learn to see poverty - and service - through a healthier biblical lens.
Sunset Gap is built on the conviction that healthy ministry begins with humility. As participants learn the principles of Helping Without Hurting through biblical teaching, practical service, and community relationships, they discover that lasting transformation grows through dignity, partnership, and empowering others rather than creating dependency. Along the way, they develop a framework for serving with greater wisdom – one that shapes not only future mission experiences but also everyday opportunities to love and serve their own communities.
